“I wanted to follow the steps of Napoléon although we have nothing in common except the fact that we have the same astrological sign: we are both Leo”. M-F Brière

The Story as seen by Marie-France Brière

What I found fascinating is that Napoléon’s destiny is linked to islands: Corsica, his birth place, Saint Helena, his resting place, and in between l’Ile de la Cité in Paris, Elba and l’Ile d’Aix . The author Las Cases’  lead me to the Emperor through his book the “Mémorial de Sainte Hélène” which was the actual manuscript taken by the British and later found. From Las Cases story I only took the scenes of daily life. After 200 years, I do have an advantage over the manuscript content; the camera allows me to disagree with it.

Director’s notes: excerpt

“One can spend time preparing a documentary film and really think things through, but things happen and  can result to a personal introspection.
The filming of the movie was complicated because of COVID. The island of Saint Helena was basically closed to transport and the only flight available was on a medical plane out of a military airport in London on November 30 and returning January 18, 2021. I took it.
While in Saint Helena, I realized to what extend Las Cases had exaggerated his story and that his book was full of propaganda. For example when he referred to the island as a lost rock, I focused the camera on the places he mentioned and everything seemed beautiful. His house was restored as it was and is very beautiful. He and his entourage really had very good living conditions.”
